Dr Matthew Wells
Consultant Ophthalmologist | Cataract & Glaucoma Surgeon
Dr Matthew Wells believes that every patient deserves the time, expertise and personalised care required to make confident decisions about their vision.
Dr Matthew Wells is an Australian-trained ophthalmologist specialising in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma, cataract and complex anterior segment disease. He is recognised for combining meticulous surgical care with a thoughtful, individualised approach, ensuring every treatment plan is tailored to each patient’s eyes, lifestyle and long-term visual goals.
Dr Wells originally trained as an Optometrist before completing Medicine and specialist Ophthalmology training, Matthew brings a unique perspective to patient care. His foundation in optics and visual function provides an exceptional understanding of how people use their vision in everyday life. This enables him to focus not only on treating eye disease, but also on achieving the highest possible quality of vision for every patient.
Matthew completed his Ophthalmology training through Sydney Eye Hospital before undertaking advanced fellowship training in glaucoma at Westmead Hospital. He offers the full spectrum of contemporary glaucoma care, from early diagnosis and medical management through to laser and surgical treatment. His expertise includes Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage device surgery.
His philosophy is that glaucoma treatment should be as individual as the patient. Whenever appropriate, he aims to reduce reliance on long-term eye drop therapy through evidence-based treatments such as SLT and MIGS, helping minimise both the practical inconvenience and potential side effects of chronic medication while providing durable control of intraocular pressure. For patients with more advanced disease, he offers modern filtering surgery and glaucoma drainage implants with comprehensive long-term follow-up.
Cataract surgery is another major focus of Matthew’s practice. He understands that successful cataract surgery is about far more than removing a cloudy lens—it is an opportunity to optimise vision for years to come. With his background in Optometry and detailed understanding of optics, he enjoys working closely with patients to select the most appropriate intraocular lens for their individual visual needs. He has extensive experience with monofocal, toric, extended depth of focus and multifocal lens technologies, carefully tailoring each recommendation to a patient’s lifestyle, occupation and expectations.
Whether performing cataract surgery or managing glaucoma over many years, Matthew’s goal is to preserve not only sight, but also independence, confidence and quality of life.
Matthew believes that outstanding clinical outcomes begin long before entering the operating theatre. He is known for taking the time to listen carefully, explain complex eye conditions in clear and understandable language, ensuring patients feel informed, comfortable and supported throughout every stage of their care. He believes that trust, communication and genuine partnership are fundamental to achieving the best possible outcomes.
In addition to his private practice, Matthew is passionate about teaching and advancing Ophthalmic education. He is actively involved in training Ophthalmology Registrars at Sydney Eye Hospital and serves as an examiner for the University of Sydney Master of Medicine (Ophthalmic Science), assessing both optics and clinical practical examinations. He also holds an appointment as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Notre Dame School of Medicine. His educational roles reflect his commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards and contributing to the future of ophthalmology.
Outside medicine, Matthew enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, surfing, fishing and exploring the NSW coastline.
He brings the same values to his professional life that guide him personally—integrity, honesty, meticulous attention to detail and genuine compassion. Matthew is committed to providing personalised, evidence-based care, ensuring every patient feels heard, respected and confident that they are receiving treatment tailored to their individual needs and delivered to the highest standard.
