What is Refractive Error ?

Refractive error occurs when the eye doesn’t focus light precisely onto the retina, resulting in blurred vision. It takes a few common forms: myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia, an age-related stiffening of the lens that affects almost everyone over time.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms are:

  • Blurred distance vision (myopia) or blurred near and distance vision (hyperopia)
  • Distorted or blurred vision at any distance (astigmatism)
  • Difficulty focusing on near tasks such as reading, worsening with age (presbyopia)

Diagnosis

A standard eye examination and vision test identifies the type and degree of refractive error.

Treatments

  • Glasses or contact lenses — correct most refractive error
  • Refractive lens exchange — replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial one, similar in technique to cataract surgery
  • ICL (implantable contact lens) surgery — corrects very high refractive errors in cases where other options aren’t suitable
  • Laser eye surgery — reshapes the cornea using a laser, correcting refractive error and reducing or removing the need for glasses and contact lenses
Laser Eye Surgery Sydney

Over a period of time you tend to adapt to circumstances around you, and you realise as you get older that your eyesight isnt as good as it was. With this surgery it has given me back my eyesight to what it was in my twenties! It’s been fantastic. My experience was painless, it was very very straightforward. I would say… don’t put up with cataract problems.

Outcomes

Most patients achieve significantly clearer vision and reduced dependence on glasses, with high satisfaction rates for surgical options.
